Summary:A non standard assessment of the activity of an NGO and its projects. This is a story about the work of people related to Hope and Homes for Children – Bulgaria, who shared their experience, efforts and personal stories. The authors of this narrative are the participants in the assessment – decision makers, professionals and families – sharing the difficulties and small victories over poverty, mistrust, loss and alienation. This is also a story of the people next to them – colleagues, like-minded people, partners, relatives. Stories within stories about what helps families take care of their children when they can't take care of themselves.
Purpose:The assessment is a detailed first-person account of the challenges and successes of Bulgarian deinstitutionalisation. At the same time, it calls for new leadership to stop raising the next generation of children in institutions and new services alienated from families. It addresses some painful questions such as: How is evidence gathered that supporting families leads to a better life for children? How is child protection integrated into larger national policies – to prevent poverty and address the cost of living crisis?
