Summary:The book studies the significant transformation of the Bulgarian childcare system over the last two decades, drawing parallels with reform in other Eastern European countries (Romania and Moldova). The material is presented in 10 sections (with annexes). It begins with an examination of the historical/cultural context and an overview of the economic and social impact of the transition. The harm that institutional care does to children is highlighted. An overview of common perceptions about the main components of the deinstitutionalisation (DI) process is also presented. The overview of DI activities covers the period from Bulgaria's preparations for EU accession to the book's publication date in 2021, and concludes by asking the question, "Where are we?" before presenting the aspirations of DI activists for the future. Last but not least, the effects on children released from institutional care are considered.
Purpose:The book is in English and is intended for researchers and professionals in the field of child protection and deinstitutionalisation.
