Summary:The closure of the institutions has been hampered by the epidemic situation that has developed in relation to COVID-19. A change in the Law on Social Services was imposed, allowing the functioning of the 4 remaining institutions in Kardzhali, Stara Zagora, Pleven and Varna. In 2020, 8 institutions with smaller capacity (with a total of 204 children) were closed: Blagoevgrad, Burgas, Buzovgrad, Dobrich, Debelets, Sofia, Sliven and Haskovo. In 80% of the cases a family or close to family environment was provided. 3 new Service Centres for children with disabilities and chronic diseases have been established, which will take over the medical and psychological rehabilitation of children in the community.
Purpose:Informing on the ongoing activities for the closure of Institutions for medicalised social care and the opening of new support services for children with disabilities and their families in the community.
